CheckApp
Building an AI health companion from a founder's vision to a React Native app
CheckApp started with a founder's observation: in China, people were using their phone cameras and AI to get instant health insights. He wanted to bring that idea to a global wellness audience, built properly. The app uses AI to read visible health indicators from photos, tracks changes over time, and connects to health wearables for a fuller picture. At the center is an anti-tamagotchi pet companion: instead of dying when you neglect it, it thrives when you take care of yourself. We designed the full product in a sprint and built it in React Native.
Process Snapshot
An idea brought back from China, built properly from scratch
The founder came to us with a concept and no prototype: an AI-powered health scanner that reads visible indicators from a photo and tracks them over time. We started with discovery, mapping what the product needed to do, who it was for, and how scanning, biometric tracking, wearable integrations, and the pet companion would fit together into one coherent experience.
Point your phone. Get your results. Understand what they mean.
The daily health scan is the core of CheckApp: open the camera, follow a short prompt, and get an AI-generated reading of visible health indicators. The results screen explains what each metric means and how it compares to your baseline. The design had to make a technically complex flow feel effortless, especially for users who are not health professionals.
A scan, a pet, and a dashboard: three things that had to feel like one
CheckApp has three distinct interaction modes: the daily health scan, the wellness dashboard with biometrics and mood tracking, and the pet companion. The pet is the app's heartbeat, an anti-tamagotchi that gets healthier as you do. Designing these three modes to feel connected rather than bolted together was the central UX challenge.
The pet that gets healthier when you do
Most wellness apps punish you for missing a day. CheckApp's pet companion works the opposite way: neglect your health and the pet's state reflects it, but improve your habits and it visibly thrives. The mechanic turns abstract health data into something the user cares about on an emotional level. It's not gamification for the sake of it — it's a retention mechanism that actually earns it.
Designed in a sprint, shipped in React Native for iOS and Android
After the design sprint locked every screen and state, we built the app in React Native for cross-platform delivery. The AI scan, wearable integrations, and pet companion all shipped as a single coherent product. CheckApp launched with a complete design system that gives the team a solid foundation to build on.
